Coomb

/kuːm/ noun

Definition

A dry measure of capacity used historically in England, equal to about four bushels or roughly 16 gallons.

Etymology

From Old English cum or cumb, related to Old Norse and Germanic words for 'vessel' or 'container.' This medieval unit of measurement reflected the practical needs of merchants trading grain and other dry goods.

Kelly Says

Before standardized metric measurements, every region had its own quirky units—a 'coomb' in one place might not equal a coomb in another, which actually made international trade really tricky and led to constant disputes.
