Definition
The position, office, or term of service of a copastor; the shared pastoral leadership of a congregation.
Etymology
From copastor + -ate (a suffix forming nouns of office or state). The suffix follows the pattern of 'pastorate' to describe the institutional role.
Kelly Says
Copastorate is newer terminology that reflects genuine changes in church governance—it's the institutional recognition that spiritual leadership no longer needs to be singular, which would have been revolutionary just 50 years ago.

Gender History
Inherited from 'pastorate,' an institutional position historically held exclusively by men. Female pastoral leadership is a recent structural innovation in most denominations.
Inclusive Usage
Use 'copastorate' when describing shared clerical roles. When naming participants, specify identities to counter default masculine assumption.
Inclusive Alternatives
["co-pastoral office","shared pastoral leadership"]
Empowerment Note
Women co-pastors and co-pastorate participants fought institutional resistance to gain these roles; name them explicitly.
