Definition
Another word for coprolite; a stone or rock-hard mass of fossilized feces found in geological strata.
Etymology
From Greek 'kopros' (feces) + 'lithos' (stone). A less common synonym for coprolite, appearing in older geological texts with essentially the same scientific meaning.
Kelly Says
The existence of two nearly-identical words—coprolite and coprolith—shows how 19th-century scientists loved coining Greek-based terms without always coordinating. It's the paleontological equivalent of having both 'phone' and 'telephone' in English!
