A brass musical instrument with a conical bore, resembling a cornet or French horn, used particularly in 19th-century orchestras and bands.
Etymology
From Latin 'cornu' (horn) plus a suffix possibly derived from '-opean' or related terms. The cornopean emerged in the 19th century as a hybrid brass instrument combining features of the horn and cornet, reaching peak popularity in British military and brass bands.

The cornopean was invented to solve a specific problem: musicians needed an instrument easier to play than a French horn but more sophisticated than a cornet—it became hugely popular and then completely disappeared, making it one of music history's forgotten dead ends!
