Definition
As a verb, it means to show or have a close connection between two or more things. As a noun, it is one of two or more things that are closely related or affect each other.
Etymology
From Medieval Latin *correlatus* 'related together', from *com-* 'together' and *relatus*, past participle of *referre* 'to refer, relate'. The idea is things that are referred or linked to each other.
Kelly Says
When two things correlate, they move together—but that doesn’t prove one causes the other. Ice cream sales and sunburns correlate because of a hidden factor: hot weather. This difference between correlation and causation is one of the most important—and most ignored—ideas in statistics.
