Corrie

/ˈkɒri/ noun

Definition

A cirque — a steep-sided hollow at the head of a valley or on a mountainside, formed by glacial erosion.

Etymology

From Scottish Gaelic 'coire' (cauldron/kettle). Highland Scots saw these glacier-carved bowls in the mountains and called them 'cauldrons' — giant stone kettles carved by ice.

Kelly Says

Scottish highlanders looked at these huge bowl-shaped hollows carved by glaciers and called them CAULDRONS! Imagine a giant making soup in a mountain! Geology + Scottish imagination = the best place names! 🏔️🍲
