Definition
In a way that shows comfort with many different cultures and ideas from around the world.
Etymology
From cosmopolitan (from Greek kosmos 'world' + polis 'city') plus the adverbial suffix -ly. The term evolved from describing citizens of the world in ancient philosophy to modern usage meaning culturally sophisticated and open-minded.
Kelly Says
The Stoic philosophers 2,000 years ago actually invented this concept—they called themselves 'cosmopolitans' to mean they belonged to the universe first, their city second. Today it's mostly used to describe fashionable city people who speak multiple languages!
