Costumery

/kɒˈstjuːməri/ noun

Definition

Costumes collectively, the craft or business of making costumes, or an excessive concern with fashionable dress.

Etymology

From 'costume' plus the suffix '-ery' (a place where something is done, or a collection of things). This term developed in the 18th century as theater costumes became more elaborate and costume-making became a recognized profession.

Kelly Says

In Shakespeare's time, 'costumery' was sometimes used mockingly to criticize people obsessed with fancy clothes—it meant fussy, excessive attention to looking good rather than being good. The same word now refers respectfully to the entire art form.
