Definition
A faint light visible on the opposite side of the sky from the sun, often seen just after sunset or before sunrise.
Etymology
From counter- (opposite) + glow (emit light). This astronomical term describes the gegenschein or counterglow phenomenon, likely named by observing its position opposite the sun's direction in the sky.
Kelly Says
The counterglow is caused by sunlight reflecting off interplanetary dust, and it's so faint that most people miss it even though it's visible on dark nights—ancient astronomers were amazed by it!
