Definition
In sailing, a change of direction made by turning the boat in the opposite direction of a previous tack, or a strategic maneuver made in response to an opponent's tack.
Etymology
From counter- + tack. Tack comes from Middle Low German takk meaning 'fastening point.' In sailing, it evolved to mean 'direction.' The counter- compound emerged in nautical terminology to describe tactical course changes.
Kelly Says
In sailing, a good skipper reads the wind and their opponent's moves, then executes a countertack that forces the other boat to chase them upwind—it's like chess on water!
