Definition
A one-piece garment that covers your whole body, worn to protect your clothes while working.
Etymology
From 'cover' + 'all.' The word is relatively modern, emerging in the early 20th century as industrialization created a need for protective workwear. It combined simple English words to describe the function of the garment.
Kelly Says
Coveralls became iconic in the industrial era—a car mechanic in coveralls became an American archetype of skilled labor, and the garment's design is so practical that astronauts and surgeons still wear versions of them today.
