Definition
A lightweight blanket or bed covering, usually decorative, that goes on top of other bedding.
Etymology
From Middle English 'coverlet,' which combines 'cover' (from Old French 'covrir') with '-let' (a diminutive suffix from Old French meaning small). The '-let' ending suggests it's a smaller or lighter version of a full cover.
Kelly Says
The '-let' diminutive suffix gave us hundreds of cozy words: booklet, leaflet, droplet, and bracelet. Medieval people loved adding '-let' to create cute, smaller versions of things—and a coverlet really is just a smaller, lighter cover than a full blanket!
