Definition
Third person singular present tense of cremate; burns a dead body to ashes as part of funeral practices.
Etymology
From the verb cremate, itself from Latin cremare (to burn). Modern cremation as a practice dates to the 19th century, but the term followed ancient Latin terminology.
Kelly Says
The word cremate preserved Latin cremāre intact because cremation was essentially rediscovered as a modern practice—19th-century funeral reformers looked to classical antiquity and borrowed the Latin verb wholesale.
