Definition
A crescendo is a gradual increase in loudness or intensity, especially in music. It can also describe any situation that builds up to a peak.
Etymology
From Italian *crescendo* meaning “growing,” from Latin *crescere* “to grow.” It entered musical language in the 18th century as a direction for players to get louder.
Kelly Says
People often say ‘at a crescendo’ to mean the peak, but in music the crescendo is the climb, not the top. The real top is called the climax—crescendo is the staircase, not the roof.
