Definition
Growing or increasing in size, strength, or intensity; characterized by growth or expansion.
Etymology
Derived from Latin crescere ('to grow' or 'to increase'), with the suffix '-ive' (meaning 'characterized by' or 'tending to'). This root also gives us 'crescent' and 'crescendo.'
Kelly Says
The Latin root 'crescere' is hiding in tons of English words—crescendo, increase, decrease—and they all share the deep idea of change and growth, which is how ancient speakers understood becoming something new.
