Definition
A member of the archosaur order Crocodilia, including crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gharials. They are semi-aquatic predators with powerful jaws, armored skin, and a four-chambered heart.
Etymology
From Greek 'krokodeilos' meaning pebble worm, possibly referring to their pebbly skin texture. The word traveled through Latin 'crocodilus' into English, maintaining its association with these ancient predators.
Kelly Says
Crocodilians are the closest living relatives to birds and share many surprising features, including complex parental care and even primitive vocal communication between mothers and babies! They're also the only reptiles with a four-chambered heart like mammals and birds.
