Cross my fingers

Definition

To hope for good luck or a favorable outcome, often while making the gesture of crossing one finger over another.

Etymology

This practice originated in early Christianity, where crossing fingers was believed to invoke the power of the cross for protection and good fortune. The gesture was thought to ward off evil spirits and bring divine blessing. Over time, it evolved from a religious practice into a secular expression of hope.

Kelly Says

The finger-crossing gesture is so ingrained in many cultures that people often do it unconsciously when expressing hope, even when speaking on the phone where others can't see it. Interestingly, some cultures consider it bad luck to cross fingers behind one's back when making a promise, as it supposedly negates the commitment.
