Definition
Stubborn and unreasonable opinions or whimsical ideas that someone insists upon; also, a musical note equal to one quarter of a whole note.
Etymology
From Old French 'crochete' (a hook or notch), metaphorically extended to mean twisted thoughts; also used in music as a hooked note symbol.
Kelly Says
A crotchet in music is literally a hooked-looking note on a staff, and someone with crotchets (stubborn ideas) has 'hooked' thoughts they won't let go of—the same visual metaphor explains both meanings, which is why language is weirdly consistent.
