Cryptomonad

/ˈkrɪptoʊmɑːnæd/ noun

Definition

A single-celled organism from the group Cryptophyta, which are algae with unique internal structures and often reddish-brown pigments.

Etymology

From Greek 'kryptos' (hidden) + 'monad' (single unit). Scientists named them 'crypto' because their chloroplasts and internal structures were difficult to see and understand with early microscopes.

Kelly Says

Cryptomonads are like the secret agents of the ocean—they're incredibly common in freshwater and marine ecosystems but hide from easy detection, yet they produce enormous amounts of the oxygen we breathe!
