Cuba

/ˈkjuːbə/ proper noun

Definition

Cuba is an island country in the Caribbean Sea, just south of the United States. It is known for its music, cigars, beaches, and long history of political tension with the U.S.

Etymology

The name likely comes from the Taíno word *Cubao* or *Coabana*, possibly meaning “fertile land” or “great place.” Spanish explorers adopted the local name when they colonized the island.

Kelly Says

Cuba is geographically close to the U.S. but politically distant, which has frozen many things in time—like the famous old American cars still driving in Havana. Its music, especially salsa and son, quietly traveled the world even when its politics were blocked.
