Definition
A small larva or caterpillar, particularly the larva of the currant moth or sawfly, that feeds on currant bushes and can damage crops.
Etymology
Compound of 'currant' plus 'worm'; named for the food plant of the larva; as currants became commercially important, specific pests were named in relation to the crop they damaged.
Kelly Says
Gardeners in the 1800s became fascinated with currantworms because controlling them meant protecting profitable currant crops—this led to some of the first systematic studies of insect pest management.
