Definition
In a brief and somewhat rude or unfriendly manner; without warmth or politeness.
Etymology
From the adjective 'curt,' which comes from Latin 'curtus' meaning 'shortened' or 'cut short.' The adverb form evolved to describe speaking in short, abrupt words.
Kelly Says
When someone replies 'curtly,' they're literally cutting their words short—the root Latin word 'curtus' means 'cut.' It's why we still say 'cut to the chase' for being brief.
