Curule

/ˈkjʊərəl/ adjective

Definition

Relating to a type of official chair or position of high authority in ancient Rome, or describing something of high rank or importance.

Etymology

From Latin 'currulis,' meaning 'relating to a chariot,' from 'currus' (chariot). Roman magistrates of high rank sat in special curved chairs called sella curulis.

Kelly Says

The curule chair was basically ancient Rome's symbol of power—it was a folding stool with curved legs that only certain officials could sit in, so people could tell your importance by your seat!
