Etymology
From cyano- (cyan/blue) + genesis (origin, production). Greek roots meaning 'the origin of blue things' or compounds containing cyanide.

Some plants actually produce cyanide as a defense mechanism—cyanogenesis is how they make toxins that protect them from being eaten, which is why cassava root must be carefully processed before eating.
