Definition
Plural of cyanosis; multiple instances or types of bluish discoloration caused by insufficient oxygen in the blood.
Etymology
From cyanosis (the medical condition of bluish skin) with plural -es. Cyanosis comes from cyano- (blue) + -osis (condition or disease).
Kelly Says
Different types of cyanosis tell different stories—central cyanosis means the blood itself is poorly oxygenated (heart or lung problem), while peripheral cyanosis just means poor circulation to the extremities (like cold hands), so doctors can diagnose by looking at where the blue appears.
