Cytogeny

/saɪˈtɑdʒəni/ noun

Definition

The origin and development of cells in an organism.

Etymology

Greek 'kytos' (cell) and 'genesis' (origin/development). An older scientific term largely replaced by 'cytogenesis,' but still sometimes used to describe the evolutionary or developmental process of cell formation.

Kelly Says

Cytogeny is basically a fancier, older way of saying 'cell origin'—it's more commonly used in historical texts and older biology books. Scientists tend to prefer the cleaner term 'cytogenesis' nowadays.
