Daincha

/ˈdaɪntʃə/ noun

Definition

An East Indian annual herb (Sesbania aculeata) used as a green manure crop and as a source of fiber, also spelled daincha or dhaincha.

Etymology

From Hindi 'dhaiñcha' (ढैंचा), a plant native to the Indian subcontinent. The English name preserves the Hindi name for this economically important legume.

Kelly Says

Daincha was essentially the ancient Indian solution to sustainable farming—it's a plant that actually adds nitrogen to the soil, so farmers could rotate it in to naturally fertilize their fields centuries before industrial fertilizers.
