Definition
Milk and foods made from milk, such as cheese, butter, and yogurt; also a place where such products are made or sold.
Etymology
From Middle English 'deierie', related to 'dey' meaning 'woman who looks after the milk animals'. The word moved from meaning the worker’s place to the products themselves.
Kelly Says
Dairy began as the workplace of the milk-keeper, not the milk itself. Now the job has disappeared from the word, and only the products remain in everyday use.
