Damascus

/dəˈmæskəs/ noun

Definition

The capital city of Syria, one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Also refers to Damascus steel, a legendary type of steel with distinctive watered patterns.

Etymology

From Greek 'Damaskos', possibly from Aramaic 'Darmeśeq' or ancient Semitic roots. The steel name comes from the city being a major trading center for these prized blades in medieval times.

Kelly Says

Damascus steel was so legendary that medieval Europeans believed it was forged with magical properties, when in fact it achieved its strength through advanced metallurgy involving carbon nanotubes - a technology we've only recently understood. The secret of making true Damascus steel was lost for centuries.
