Dams

/dæmz/ noun

Definition

Barriers constructed across waterways to control water flow, create reservoirs, or generate hydroelectric power. They alter natural water patterns and create artificial lakes.

Etymology

From Middle Dutch 'dam' meaning 'embankment' or 'dike'. The word spread through Germanic languages as humans learned to control water flow for agriculture and flood prevention, dating back thousands of years.

Kelly Says

Beavers were Earth's first engineers, building dams that create wetland ecosystems supporting countless species. Human dams can last centuries - some Roman dams are still functional today, while also fundamentally reshaping entire river systems and regional climates.
