Deadrise

/ˈdɛdraɪz/ noun

Definition

In shipbuilding, the upward angle or curve of a ship's hull from the lowest point (the keel) toward the sides, measured as the vertical distance the hull rises over a horizontal distance.

Etymology

From 'dead' (absolutely, completely) and 'rise' (to go upward). The term combines 'dead' as an intensifier with 'rise' to describe the definitive structural rise measurement of a ship's hull.

Kelly Says

Deadrise is crucial to boat design—high deadrise means a V-shaped hull (cuts through waves smoothly), while low deadrise means a flat bottom (stability in calm water)—and different boat types have different deadrise angles, which is why a fishing boat feels different from a speedboat.
