Definition
Business transactions, interactions, or relationships between people or organizations, often involving negotiation or exchange.
Etymology
From Middle English delen meaning 'to divide, distribute', from Old English dǣlan. The sense evolved from physical division of goods to any kind of business transaction or interpersonal exchange. The plural form 'dealings' emerged in the 15th century to describe ongoing business relationships.
Kelly Says
The word 'deal' originally meant to divide or share out portions, like dealing cards, which explains why we still say someone got a 'good deal' - they received a favorable portion in the transaction. This connection between division and transaction reveals how commerce historically involved the literal sharing out of goods.
