Definition
Plural of debenture; certificates of debt or bonds issued by a company or government, typically unsecured and repaid only from general revenue.
Etymology
From debenture (plural debentures), ultimately from Latin debentur 'they are owed' (from debere 'to owe'). These certificates formalized the concept of owing debt in a transferable, tradeable form.
Kelly Says
Debentures were how the British Empire and American industrial moguls funded their ambitions—imagine if major companies today could just issue 'trust us' bonds and have people buy them with their life savings!
