Definition
The present participle of decrypt; the act of converting encrypted or coded information into readable form.
Etymology
From de- (reverse) + crypt (from Greek kryptos, meaning hidden). Decryption became common in the 20th century with cryptography and digital technology to describe breaking codes.
Kelly Says
During World War II, breaking enemy codes was called 'decryption,' and the Enigma machine breakers at Bletchley Park were essentially the world's first cybersecurity experts doing what modern hackers do with computers.
