Definition
The action of delaying or postponing something; postponement to a later time.
Etymology
From defer (Latin differre) + -ment (suffix forming nouns from verbs, from Old French -ment and Latin -mentum). The suffix -ment creates nouns describing an action or its result.
Kelly Says
During the Vietnam War, college students could get a draft deferment, literally buying time. The word became politically charged—a deferment meant your life continued while others' didn't. Words can carry historical weight.
