Etymology
From the Latin imperative 'dele' (meaning 'delete' or 'destroy'), which was used as a proofreading mark. In printing and editing, this became a technical term, and -ing was added to create the continuous form.

The proofreader's mark ⌀ (a line through text with a little loop) literally represents the word 'dele'—editors have been using this 500-year-old instruction for so long that it became its own verb with its own conjugations.
