Deluminize

/diːˈluːmɪnaɪz/ verb

Definition

To remove light from something; to darken or eliminate illumination.

Etymology

From Latin 'de-' (remove) + 'luminize' (from Latin 'lumen' meaning light, + '-ize' verb suffix). The opposite of 'luminize' (to illuminate).

Kelly Says

'Deluminize' is a rare technical term, but it beautifully demonstrates English's ability to reverse meanings with the prefix 'de-'—just as 'code' and 'decode,' 'luminize' and 'deluminize' are mirror opposites!
