Demirevetment

/ˌdɛmɪrɪˈvɛtmənt/ noun

Definition

A partial facing or casing of stone or masonry applied to fortifications or buildings for structural or aesthetic purposes.

Etymology

From demi- (half) + revetment (from French revêtir, to clothe). This architectural term emerged in military fortification design, especially from the 17th century onward.

Kelly Says

Military engineers discovered that you didn't need to face an entire wall with expensive stone—a demirevetment on just the exposed side or the foundation would provide strength and look impressive while saving money and labor.
