Definition
To formally accuse, publicly condemn, or report someone to authorities for a crime or wrongdoing.
Etymology
From Latin 'denuntiare' (to announce against, inform against), composed of 'de-' (against) and 'nuntiare' (to announce, report). Related to 'nuntius' (messenger).
Kelly Says
The word 'denunciate' became notorious during the McCarthy era and Cold War when neighbors, colleagues, and even family members would 'denunciate' each other—it's a verb whose history is inseparable from political terror and betrayal.
