Depart

/dɪˈpɑːrt/ verb

Definition

To leave a place, especially to begin a journey. It can also mean to move away from a usual way of doing something.

Etymology

From Old French *departir* meaning 'to divide, to separate, to leave', from Latin *dis-* ('apart') and *partire* ('to divide'). The idea of separating or going apart turned into the sense of leaving.

Kelly Says

We still hear the old idea of 'parting' in 'depart': you and the place are literally parting ways. That’s why we also talk about 'departing from tradition'—you’re leaving the usual path behind.
