Depletion

/dɪˈpliʃən/ noun

Definition

The reduction or exhaustion of a resource, substance, or supply through use or consumption.

Etymology

From Latin 'depletio' meaning emptying out, from 'deplere' (to empty completely). From 'de-' (completely) and 'plere' (to fill), literally meaning to unfill or make completely empty.

Kelly Says

The word perfectly captures one of humanity's greatest challenges - whether we're depleting our planet's resources, our personal energy, or our bank accounts. It's the inevitable flipside of consumption in a finite world.
