Definition
A behavioral therapy technique that gradually reduces anxiety responses by pairing relaxation with progressively more anxiety-provoking stimuli.
Etymology
From 'de-' (reversal) + 'sensitive' from Latin 'sentire' (to feel) + '-ization.' Developed by Joseph Wolpe in the 1950s.
Kelly Says
Desensitization gently teaches your brain that the scary thing isn't actually dangerous — step by step, fear shrinks until you can face it calmly.
