Definition
A hypothetical instinct or drive toward destruction, aggression, or self-destruction; a psychological concept opposing the life instinct.
Etymology
From Latin 'destruere' (to destroy) plus the suffix '-o' (used to create nouns like 'libido'). It was proposed by psychoanalytic theorists as the opposing force to 'libido' and life-affirming impulses.
Kelly Says
Sigmund Freud theorized that humans possess both 'libido' (life instinct) and 'thanatos' (death instinct, similar to destrudo), suggesting we're biologically driven toward both creation and destruction—a dark but influential idea that shaped 20th-century psychology.
