Detectability

/dɪˌtektəˈbɪləti/ noun

Definition

The quality or degree to which something can be detected, found, or discovered.

Etymology

From 'detect' (Latin detectus, past participle of detegere: de- 'uncovering' + tegere 'to cover') plus -ability (suffix forming nouns of quality). The suffix -ability makes abstract qualities from adjectives.

Kelly Says

Detectability is crucial in science and medicine—doctors measure how detectable diseases are in blood tests, and astronomers discuss the detectability of distant exoplanets. Measurable visibility is a superpower!
