The midbrain or a major division of the brain in vertebrates, particularly referring to the middle section of the brainstem.
Etymology
From Greek 'deuteros' (second) + 'enkephalos' (brain). In embryological and anatomical terminology, the brain is divided into primary divisions, and 'deutencephalon' refers to the 'second' major brain section in developmental ordering.

When scientists named brain parts using Greek 'first,' 'second,' and 'third,' they were naming them by development order, not importance—so the 'deutencephalon' (second-brain) is actually evolutionarily ancient and controls survival functions like breathing and heart rate.
