Definition
A person or device that makes telephone calls or dials a number.
Etymology
From 'dial' (to turn a numbered wheel to call someone) plus the agent suffix '-er'. The word emerged in the early 20th century with the invention of rotary telephones.
Kelly Says
Before smartphones, 'dialler' was a crucial job—operators called 'diallers' would connect calls manually by plugging cables into switchboards, making them essential infrastructure for early telecommunications networks.
