Dialyze

/ˈdaɪ.ə.laɪz/ verb

Definition

To separate substances using dialysis, where small molecules pass through a semipermeable membrane while larger ones are blocked.

Etymology

From Greek dia- 'through' + lysis 'loosening' + -ize verb suffix. Coined in the 1850s as the technique became scientifically understood and needed a verb form.

Kelly Says

Dialyze is derived from the same Greek roots that give us 'analysis' (breaking apart to understand) and 'paralysis' (unable to loosen/move)—it's one of thousands of English words built from these ancient Greek word-parts.
