Definition
The use of the seven-note scales (major and minor) that form the foundation of Western tonal music. Diatonic music primarily uses notes within a single key without chromatic alterations.
Etymology
From Greek diatonikos meaning 'proceeding by tones,' from dia- 'through' and tonos 'tone.' This refers to the pattern of whole and half steps that create the familiar major and minor scales.
