Diaulos

/diˈɔːlos/ noun

Definition

In ancient Greece, a double-reed pipe musical instrument or a race course that required running to a point and back.

Etymology

From Greek 'dia-' (double, through) and 'aulos' (pipe, hollow reed), literally 'double pipe,' one of the most important instruments in Greek music and religious ceremonies.

Kelly Says

The diaulos was THE party instrument of ancient Greece—louder and more exciting than the lyre, it appeared at festivals, plays, and athletic competitions, making it basically the electric guitar of the ancient world.
