Definition
The game of gambling or playing with dice, or the act of throwing and wagering money on dice.
Etymology
From 'dice' (plural of die, from Latin 'datum' meaning 'that which is given/thrown') + 'play' (Old English 'plega'). This compound emerged in Middle English around the 13th century as dice gambling became widespread in European societies.
Kelly Says
Diceplay was so popular and problematic in medieval times that cities and kingdoms passed laws restricting it, sometimes severing cheaters' fingers or ears—showing how seriously authorities took gambling addiction even 800 years ago.
